Picornaviruses Flashcards
1
Q
What consist of the Picornaviruses?
A
- Enterovirus
- Rhinovirus
- Hepatitis A virus
2
Q
What are the properties of Picornaviruses?
A
- Smallest (pico) RNA viruses
- non-enveloped, ssRNA
3
Q
Enterovirus pathophysiology
A
- Vertical transmission form infected mother to infant
- Symptoms of Mother: listlessness, anorexia, transient respiratory distress
- Symptoms of infant: myocarditis, fulminant hepatitis
4
Q
How many serotypes are there in Poliovirus? Incubation period? What does it infect
A
- 3 serotypes
- Incubation period: 7-14 days
- infects peyer’s patches and anterior horn cells causing flaccid paralysis
5
Q
What are the 2 Vaccines of Polio?
A
Intramuscular poliovirus vaccine (IPV)
- formalin inactivated virus of all 3 serotypes
- produces IgG; no local immunity (IgA)
Oral Poliovirus Vaccine (more common)
- live attenuated virus of all 3 serotypes
- Produces local immunity (IgA)
6
Q
Coxsackievirus A causes
A
-inflammation & necrosis of skeletal muscles
-meningitis
-febrile illness
-herpangina
hand-foot-and-mouth disease
7
Q
Coxsackievirus B causes
A
- focal degeneration of the brain and necrosis of skeletal m
- neonatal disease
- myocarditis
- hepatitis
- meningitis
8
Q
What does Rhinovirus cause? Incubation period? Transmission? Treatment?
A
- Common cold w/ no fever
- Incubation period: 2-4 days
- Transmission: respiratory secretions
- no vaccine but secretory IgA; use of Zinc
9
Q
What are Echovirus’ syndromes?
A
- aseptic meningitis
- paralysis
- rash
- respiratory disease
