Picornaviridae overview Flashcards
Picornavirus characteristics
RNA virus (+ sense strand) Naked (lack viral envelope
Transmission
Fecal-oral route- predominantly
Exception (rhinovirus- txmission through respiratory droplets)
Replication
Uses host RNA polymerase to translate its RNA to protein (no additional machinery is needed- true for all + sense RNA viruses)
Translated into long poly-protein product; proteases cleave them into active products)
Replicates in the cytoplasm (uses host cell content; host mRNA is analogous to + strand viruses)
Family
PERCH:
Enterovirus- Poliovirus, Echovirus, and Coxsackie A and B
Rhinovirus
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A
Causes HSM
Enterovirus
1 cause of aseptic (non-bacterial) meningitis
Characteristics: Low glucose, no organisms and elevated proteins
Children are particularly susceptible
Rhinovirus
