Pickup/Polar patterns Flashcards
What are the advantages of an omnidirectional mic?
Has a natural sound and will pick up room sounds and reflections if wanted.
What are the disadvantages of an omnidirectional mic?
For individual recording there may be too much spill and room sound. Feedback is more likely in live situations.
What are the common uses of an omnidirectional mic?
Ambient recording and close microphone for smaller groups or individuals where the spill can be controlled.
What are the advantages of a figure of 8 mic?
Good for eliminating spill from the sides.
What are the disadvantages of a figure of 8 mic?
Could pick up unwanted sound from behind.
What are the common uses of a figure of 8 mic?
Recording with two vocalists either side of the mic, or an interview involving two people.
What are the advantages of a cardioid mic?
Mainly focused to the front, so little spill or room noise picked up.
What are the disadvantages of a cardioid mic?
Needs to be used with care for close microphone vocals, as a ‘boxy’ sound can result depending on the acoustic space.
What are the common uses of a cardioid mic?
Close mic-recording and live sound in many situations. Cardioid mics are used to create am ambient stereo coincident pair.
What are the advantages of a hypercardioid mic?
Greatly reduces the possibility of spill. Can help avoid feedback in live situations.
What are the disadvantages of a hypercardioid mic?
Will pick up some sound immediately to the rear.
What are the common uses of a hypercardioid mic?
Any situation in which spill is a problem, such as close-mic drums. Also useful for stage sound, where directional focus and side rejection is important.

360 degrees
What is the coverage angle of an cardioid mic?
131 degrees
What is the coverage angle of an hypercardioid mic?
105 degrees
