piaget's theory of development Flashcards
what is cognitive
the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through experience, and the senses
what is development
the process of developing to grow and become more mature, advanced or elaborate
what does the medulla control
it controls involuntary movements such as sneezing and breathing, as well as heart rate and blood pressure
what is the medulla involved in
its involved in sending assigns from the brain to the rest of the body vie the spinal cord
what does the cerebellum help with
it helps with motor skills such as balance when learning how to walk or dance
what does the cerebellum manage
it manages physical/motor commands sent from the central nervous system
what happens in the formal operational stage (12+ years)
-kids understand sequences, consequences and abstract ideas
-priorities actions/events and thoughts
-think about how time can change things
what happens in the concrete operational stage (7-12 years)
-children apply rules and strategies help with their thinking
-they learn seridation, classification, reversibility, conservation, decentration
-children have difficulties understanding abstract ideas such as morality
what happens in the intuitive thoughts stage (4-7 years)
-children are only able to focus on one thing
-children dont understand reversibility or conservation (liquid test)
what happens in the symbolic function stage (2-4 years)
-children are ecocentric
-children use objects as symbols
what happens in the pre-operational stage (2-7 years)
-symbolic function 2-4 years)
-intuitive thoughts (4-7 years_)
what happens in the sensorimotor stage (0-2 years)
-object permanence i acquired at 6 months old
-babies use their senses and movements to understand the world
what is seriation
sorting objects e.g. into sizes
what is classification
naming and identifying objects according to size or appearance
what is reversibility
knowing that 2+4=6, therefore 6-2= (using objects, counters)
