Piaget Flashcards
What was Piaget’s view of how children learn?
Children are naturally curious scientists who learn best on their own.
What are the three phases of equilibration?
Equilibrium: No discrepancies between prior knowledge and current experience.
Disequilibrium: Discrepancy between previous knowledge and current experience.
Renewed Equilibrium: Child modifies explanation that includes and explains new experience (Accommodation)
What are the four stages of cognitive development?
- Sensorimotor
- Preoperational
- Concrete operational
- Formal operational.
What are the key happenings of the sensorimotor stage? (Birth to two years old)
- Object permanence forms.
- The A not B error. (I know the object is here, but when you hide it somewhere else, then it’s gone!)
- Representation of physical objects as mental entities.
What happens in the preoperational stage? (2-7 years)
- Explosion of language.
- Egocentrism.
- Difficulty with conservation (A halved cookie means more cookies!)
What happens in the concrete operational stage? (7-12)
- Understanding of conservation.
- Not egocentric
- Difficulty with abstracts and hypotheticals.
What happens in the formal operational stage? (12- and beyond)
Better with abstracts and hypotheticals.
Ability to use inductive and deductive reasoning.
