A working definition of personality:
A set of behavioral, emotional, and cognitive tendencies that
people display over time and across situations and that distinguish
individuals from one another
- Traits (Constant, continuum)
- States (Situations)
- Context (Situational)
Trait theory
An attempt to reduce language of description down to a manageable set of personality dimensions.
How can we measure personality?
- Interviews
- Observations.
- Surveys
What happens to personality as we age?
Becomes more stable.
What are some traits of those who have high openness to experience?
- More likely to major in the humanities
- Change careers in midlife.
- Excel in Job performance trainings
- Play an instrument.
High conscientiousness traits?
More sexually faithful to spouse, higher job ratings, live longer, more likely to play an instrument.
High extroversion traits?
Attend more college parties, identified as leaders, live and work with more people, less disturbed by sudden and loud noises (Weird).
High agreeableness?
More willing to give money, higher grades, fewer arrests.
High neuroticism?
More attention to threats, more stress at surprise math tests, higher divorce rates, more susceptible to depression and anxiety.
