Physiology Lesson 3 Flashcards
What are the 3 main levels of neural integration in the somatosensory system?
1) Receptor level
2) Circut level
3)perpetual
Spinothalamic pathwyays go from where to where and what are they primarily responsible for?
input from many types of sensory receptors. Fibers cross in spinal cord. Transmit impulses for pain pressure, touch, temperature.
Doral-column medial lemniscal pathway
Precise transmission of from ONE single type of sensory receptor. Medula to thalamus
Something notable about spinocerebral pathway
Does not contribute to conscious sensation
What is different about dorsal-column medial lemniscal pathway, spinothalamic and spinocerebral.
spinocerebral: termints in cerebellum
the other 2 termintate in sensory cortex
Give 2 examples of axon of first order sensory neurons
1) fasciculus cuneatus
2)fasciculus gracilis
Lateral spinothalamic pathway does what?
Transmits impulses concerned with pain and temperature to opposite side of brain for interpretation by somatosensory cortex.
Ventral spinothalamic pathways does what?
Transmits impulses concerned with crude touch and pressure to opposite side of brain for interpretation by somatosensory cortex.
differnce between faciclus gracillas and cuneatus
Cuneatus transmits afferent impulses from upper body Gracilis carries impulses from lower body.
What is perpetual detection
Ability to detect that a stimulus has occurred
What isi magnitude detection
ability to detect how intense the stimulus is.
What are visceral pain stimuli
Ischemia (low blood flow)
muscle stretch/spasm
irritating chemicals
