Physiology Intro Flashcards
..
What is physiology
Branch of medical sciences that deals with the NORMAL functions of the human body
What is the goal of physiology
Why and how normal bodily functions work
Homeostasis
The ability of the body to maintain a relatively stable internal environment regardless of changes that go on in the external environment
Extracellular fluid is made of
Interstitial fluid and plasma
Homeostatic factors?
Temperature Concentration of nutrients(energy) Ph Blood volume Concentration of water salt and other electrolytes Concentration of co2 and o2
The receptor?
Receives information that something in the environment is changing
The control a center
Receives information from the receptor and processes
Effector
Responds to the commands of the control center by either opposing or enhancing the stimulus
Homeostatic regulation
The process that continually work to restore and maintain homeostasis
Negativve feedback
A rise in a certain variable inhibits further production in that variable
A fall below a certain limit withdraws inhibition and permits the production
Positive feedback
A rise in a variable provokes further increase
Example is production of oxytocin in giving birth
Patient does not have enough insulin to break down sugar
Insulin depends diabetes mellitus. Type 1
Which gland, produced where stimulates the release of milk?
Prolactin from the pituitary gland
Organelles
Specialized subunits within the cell that has a specific function and is usually enclosed within it’s own lipid bilayer
What is the purpose of the phospholipid bilayer
Ensures stability of the cell membrane
