Physiology Flashcards
What does ATP stand for?
Adenosine Triphosphate
What does ATP do?
Gives our muscles energy used during exercise
What is ATP?
A molecule containing Adenosin and 3 phospates to create energy
How does ATP produce energy?
When the bond breaks between the second and the third phosphate energy is released and creates ADP.
A-P-P-P
What is ADP?
Is adenosine and two phosphates and a separate part which is and organic phosphate.
A-P-P Pi
What is the ATP breakdown?
A-P-P-P
A-P-P x P
A-P-P Pi
What are the fuels used to resynthesize ATP?
Carbohydrates, fats, proteins and creatine phosphate
What is carbs stored as?
Blood - glucose
Muscles - glycogen
Excess - Adipose tissue (liver)
What is fats stored as?
Blood - fatty acids
Muscles - triglycerides
Excess - adipose tissue
When are the fuel sources used in exercise?
Carbohydrates used during exercise, fats are used during rest and in exercise upwards of 3 hours and proteins are used in very long endurance events
What are the three energy systems?
ATP-PC, anaerobic glycolosis and aerobic
does atp pc require oxygen
Does not require oxygen
does anaerobic require oxygen?
- Does not use oxygen
does aerobic use oxygen
- Uses oxygen
What is meant by the term energy system interplay?
Means that the three systems work together to produce energy for the body while doing exercise
Basketball - when do the energy systems dominate
ATP-PC - when they go for the jump ball
Anaerobic - sprinting from one end to the other
Aerobic - lets them keep running throughout the game
