Physiology Flashcards
What do you have to see to rule out central cyanosis?
Any pink colouring (of nose and tongue)
What do you have to see to rule out jaundice?
Any white in the eyes
What causes cardiac cirrhosis?
Back pressure from heart due to right sided heart failure
How do you describe the pain caused by angina?
‘Crushing’ pain which can be associated with nausea
What 3 factors affect pulse pressure?
Stroke volume
Arterial compliance
Reflected waves
What does the first sound (lub) of systole indicate?
The closure of the mitral valve
Why would a heart murmur sound louder on expiration?
Increased thoracic pressure forces blood into the left heart which exaggerates the murmur.
What does syncope mean?
Temporary loss of consciousness caused by a fall in blood pressure.
What causes blood turbulence?
Difference in the speed of flow. Affected by stenosis.
How do you calculate MAP?
Total Peripheral Resistance X Cardiac Output.
Define stenosis.
The abnormal narrowing of a passage in the body
What kind of transplantation does not require strong immunosuppressive therapy?
Cornea transplant.
What is the role of a comparator during homeostasis?
Means of comparing the regulated variable with the set point.
Name 5 variables that are regulated using homeostasis.
Arterial blood pressure Body core temperature Arterial O2 and CO2 pressure Osmolarity of body fluids Plasma potassium and glucose concentration.
Name two stretch receptors
Baroreceptors
Osmoreceptors
