Physics-y10 Resit Flashcards
State 2 ways gamma is different from alpha
Gamma is an electromagnetic wave-Alpha is made from particles
Gamma has a stronger penetrative power(can only be stopped with metres of concrete-Alpha has weak power and can be stopped with paper
What does contaminated mean?
When radioactive particles or a radioactive source are on something like a body or object
State and explain one safety precaution scientists take to minimise the risk of contamination
Wear disposable clothing, they wear it all over their bodies so they won’t come in contact with any radioactive substances
Half life?
The time it takes for half the undecayed nuclei to decay (A)
Graph a half life
Label both the y and x axis- radioactivity and time
Line going down but never touching
Dumb maths question ab the comb
5700 x 2 is 11400 meaning 2 half lives
0.55 x 2 then that x 2
Answer is 2.2
Define the term stable
The nucleus won’t decay
The number of neutrons in this nucleus is
5 (B)
Dumb af Be neutron decay question

Describe observations of the experiment (gold)
Most alpha particles passed through the gold foil but some were deflected back, the particles were deflected at different angles
Explain how Rutherford determined his model
Most of the alpha particles went through meaning the atom is mostly empty space, however since some particles were deflected from the middle it meant that the nucleus was positive, also that the mass of the atom is concentrated in the middle.
State what Bohr added to the Rutherford model
Bohr added outer shells represented in the Bohr diagram by rings around the nucleus
Explain how the Bohr model showed why running an electric current through neon gas created bright light
An electric current excites the electrons, they now have energy that cannot be contained in the lower level outer shells and jump up to higher ones, when they come down this releases the energy they were given, in this case in the form of light. This can be seen in the Bohr model by how you can expand the outer shells
Bitchass back question
Background radiation is made from radon gas, food and buildings-it isn’t harmful but will affect the readings on the GM tube. As the experiment takes place in a factory you should measure the room several times to take an average reading. Then when the radiation source is in the room measure the readings several times to find the average. Then take away the second from the first to find the amount of radiation coming from the source
