Physics (waves) Flashcards
The amplitude of a wave-
Is the displacement from the rest position to a crest or trough.
The wavelength-
Is the length of a full cycle of the wave.
Frequency-
Is the number of complete cycles of the wave passing a certain point per second. Frequency is measured in hertz.
The period of a wave-
Is the number of seconds it takes for one full cycle.
Transverse waves-
The vibrations are perpendicular to the direction the wave travels. Most waves are transverse including:
- All electromagnetic waves
- S-waves
- Ripples and waves in water.
Longitudinal waves-
The vibrations are parallel to the direction the wave travels.
Examples are sound waves and p-waves.
Wave speed =frequency x wavelength.
Wave speed = distance divided by time
Refraction-
Waves changing direction at a boundary.
