Physics sound and space test Flashcards
What is sound?
sound is a form of energy that is produced by vibration and travels as a longitudinal wave.
What is amplitude?
The amplitude is seen as the height of the wave and defines how loud a sound is on a sound wave.
What is wave length?
The distance between 2 waves is known as the wavelength.
Where is the crest?
the crest is found at the peak of a sound wave
The higher the frequency, the higher the …
Pitch
The higher the amplitude the higher the…
Sound/ Loudness
What is a transverse wave?
This is a wave that travels away from the source at right angles to the movement of the source. they move up and down
What is a longitudinal wave?
This is a wave that travels parallel from the source.
What type of wave is a sound wave?
Longitudinal.
Can sound travel through a vacuum?
No, Bcoz there is no medium to travel through.
What is a compression?
An area with high pressure.
What is a rarefaction?
An area with low pressure.
What causes sound waves?
Vibrations
What is frequency?
The number of complete waves or vibrations.
What is interference?
The effect produced by 2 waves meeting each other. it can only happen when the waves are the same types.
What is constructive interference?
When 2 waves interfere together to form a bigger wave [Reinforce]
What is destructive interference?
When 2 waves interfere together to cancel each other out [Cancel]
What does reinforce mean?
To make stronger.
Describe the capture theory.
In the early solar system, a large object was captured by earth’s gravitational field.
Describe the fission theory.
The earth was spinning so fast that a bulge of it was thrown off to form the moon.
Describe the Co-acceleration or simultaneous formation of the moon.
The earth and the moon were formed at the same time.
Describe the impact theory.
A large asteroid hit the earth and rocks by the impact were launched up into orbit.
What is a Nebula?
A stellar nursery- a region of clouds of dust and gas. This is where stars are born.
What is the closest nebula.
Orion nebula (M42)
How is a Red giant formed?
When a star begins to run out of hydrogen and helium its layers begin to expand and become less bright.
The continents were once connected together to form a larger continent called Pangea. What evidence can you use to prove this theory correct?
- Study of fossils: similar fossils are found on different continents. this could show that they were once joined or close together.
- Pattern of rocks: Similar patterns of rock layer on different continents could show that they were once close together or joined.
- Shape of continent. shape of continents fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.
Why did Pangea break apart?
Because of convection currents under the crust pulling pieces of the large continent away.
