Physics: Simple Kinetic Molecular Model of Matter Flashcards
State the distinguishing properties of solids, liquids and gases.
Solids: Particles tightly packed in a regular arrangement. Very strong intermolecular force. Fixed volume and shape. Not easily compressible.
Liquids: Particles close together in a random arrangement. Moderately strong intermolecular force. Fixed volume but is fluid. Almost can’t be compressed.
Gases: Particles very far apart in a random arrangement. No intermolecular force. Expands to fill container. Highly highly compressible.
Describe qualitatively the molecular structure of solids, liquids and gases.
Solids: Tightly packed, regular arrangement.
Liquids: Less tightly packed, random arrangement
Gases: Far apart, random arrangement
