Biology: Coordination and Response Flashcards
Define Hormone.
A chemical substance, produced by a gland, carried by blood which alters the activity of one or more specific target organs and is then destroyed by the liver.
What is the role of the hormone adrenaline?
Increases blood glucose concentration and pulse rate, giving a burst of energy.
AGS content because IG has barely anything wow wee makes me sad: List glands and hormones produced. Part 1 Pituitary Thyroid
Pituitary Gland in base of brain - Produces Leutenising hormone and Fossicle Stimulating Hormone for menstruation. Also produces growth hormone. Can be manufactured and presacribed to control growth disorders in children.
Thyroid Gland - Produces Thyroxine to control body’s metabolism, and speed of respiration in cells of body. needs iodine in diet or may cause problems.
AGS content of glands/hormones cont. Part 2 Pancreas Ovaries Testes
Pancreas - Produces Insulin and Glucagon to control glucose levels in blood. Insulin converts glucose to glycogen to be stored in the liver, and glucagon does the opposite, converting glycogen back into glucose to travel in the blood.
Ovaries - Produces Oestrogen and Progesterone
Testes - Produces Testosterone. These control the body’s development into sexual maturity during puberty and the development of gametes.
Define Geotropism.
A response in which plants grow towards or away from gravity. Upward growth is negative geotropism.
Define Phototropism.
A response in which plants grow towards or away from a direction from which light is coming. Towards is positve phototropism.
Define Auxins.
Plant hormone which causes elongation of cells in shoots and involved in regulating plant growth.
