Physics P6 Flashcards
What is specific latent heat
The energy needed to change the state of 1kg of a substance
When a substance is melting or boiling…..
You are putting in energy
What is the energy used for when melting or boiling
It is used for breaking intermolecular bonds
What do the flat spots on a heating graph represent
That is where energy is being transferred (in or out) but not changing the temp (boiling, melting , freezing, condensing)
Why does the temp go down when condensing or freezing
Because bonds are forming which releases energy causing the internal energy to go down but the temp doesn’t go down until the substance has turned to liquid(condensing) or solid (freezing)
Formula for specific latent heat
Specific latent heat(j/kg)Energy(J)/Mass(kg
Internal energy (latent heat)
Total kinetic and potential energy of all the particles that make up a system
Increasing the temp of a substance….
Increases its internal energy
When do you use specific latent heat of vaporisation
When the substance is boiling or condensing
When do you use specific latent heat of fusion
When a substance is melting or freezing
What does fluid refer to
Gas or liquid as both they’re particals are free to move about
Kinetic theory of matter
Matter is composed by a large number of partials that are in constant motion
Brownian motion
Where Robert Brown pollen grains in water and looked at them under a microscope they moved about which proves that water partials that we can’t see are pushing them about causing them to move
Formula for density
Density(g/cm^3)=mass(g)/volume(cm^3)
What floats in water
Objects with a lower density than water float
