Physics - Kinetic Theory Flashcards
What are the two main principles of the kinetic theory?
The Kinetic theory states that everything is made up of tiny particles, and the arrangement and movement of the particles determines the properties of solids, liquids and gases
What are the particles like in solids?
In solids, particles are held closely together by strong bonds (forces).
Why can’t solids be compressed?
in solids the particles can vibrate but not move around as they are held together by strong binds. This explains why solids usually keep their shape and usually cant be compressed
What is a Changing State?
If the air over a liquid is not moving it will eventually become…?
saturated
What are the factors affecting condensation/evaporation?
- the temperature is higher
- there is more surface area from which the particles can escape
- air is moving over the surface of the liquid and this carries away any evaporated particles so they cannot condense back into the liquid again.
How is the temperature of a substance determined?
the average kinetic energy of its particles
What happens when a gas condenses to form a liquid?
Energy is released as the particles become closer together and form strong bonds.
What is released when a liquid freezes?
energy
when does condensation happen?
it happens when a gas cools down
When does condensation often happen?
When gas comes into contact with a cold surface such as a mirror or window
How does condensation happen faster?
If the temperature is colder
If the temperature is colder, what happens to the rate of condensation?
It becomes faster
