Chemistry - Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions Flashcards
What happens when chemical reactions take place?
Energy is transferred as bonds are being broken and made
What are exothermic reactions?
Reactions that transfer energy to the surroundings. The energy transferred often heats up the surroundings and so the temperature increases.
What does the energy in exothermic reactions do?
The energy transferred often heats up the surroundings and so the temperature increases
What other reactions do exothermic reactions include?
- combustion, eg.burning fuels
- oxidation reactions, eg. respiration
- neutralisation reactions involving acids and bases
What are endothermic reactions?
reactions that take in energy from the surroundings. some cause a decrease in temperature and others require a supply of energy.
Why does the temperature decrease when some solids are mixed with water?
As endothermic changes happen when they dissolve.
What reaction needs to be heated continuously to keep the reaction going?
Thermal decomposition reactions
