Biology - Cells and Microscopy revision Flashcards
for that test yk
What sub-cellular structures to plant cells have that animal cells dont?
Large permanent vacuole, cell wall, chloroplasts(only those rexposed to sunlight)
what is an organelle?
a sub-cellular structure inside the cell which performs a function
what are cell walls in plants made up of?
cellulose
What does the nucleus do?
contains the DNA which codes for proteins
what does the cytoplasm do?
this is the place in which most chemical reactions take place
what does the cell membrane do?
controls the passage of substances into and out of the cell?
what does the mitochondria do?
this is where aerobic respiration takes place
what do the ribosomes do?
where protein synthesis occurs
what does the chloroplast do?
absorbs light energy to make food (glucose) via photosynthesis
what does the permanent vacoule do?
filled with cell sap
what does the cell wall do?
strengthens the cell and maintains its rigid structure
WHat is resolution?
It is the ability to distinguish between two separate points,
what is magnification?
how much larger comething looks in comparison to real life
what are eukaryotes?
all have cell membrane, cell wall, cytoplasm, ribosomes, and genetic material in a nucleus (like animals, plants, fungi, etc)
what are prokaryotes?
single celled living organisms eg. bacteria and they all have cell membrane, cell wall, cytoplasm, ribosomes, slime capsule, and have a single loop of genetic materail floating in the cytoplasm and the cell wall is not made of cellulose. They have small rings of DNA called plasmids
