What are the five main nutrients needed for a balanced diet? (+2 extra)
Carbohydrates, Protein, Lipids (Fats and Oils), Vitamins, Minerals + FIbre and Water
What do carbohydrates do?
fuel for the body - active and growing people need lots of carbohydrates
Where do you get carbohydrates from?
Starch, which is found in bread, potatoes, etc.
What do lipids do?
they are a store of energy which the body uses in case it runs out of carbohydrates
Where do you get lipids from?
Fat contained in butter, cream etc.
What do proteins do?
They are vital for growth and to repair damaged areas.
Where do you get proteins from?
Protein contained in meat, eggs, etc.
What do vitamins do?
Only needed in small amounts - they keep many vital processes happening
Where do you get vitamins from?
Vegetables, fruits, etc.
What does fibre do?
Helps food move through your digestive system
Where do you get fibre from?
vegetables, cereals, etc.
What does water do?
75% of the body is water and all chemical reactions take place in it.
