Physics Final (2b): ENERGY & CONSERVATION Flashcards
Energy
the ability to do work, to cause a force that moves an object a distance
Work (W) (W=Fd)
the ability of a force to change forms of energy.
the equation W = Fd measures (W)ork by multiplying (F)orce by (d)istance.
Work-Energy Theorem
Work (W) can also be defined as a change in kinetic energy
Mechanical Energy
energy due to the position and/or the motion of an object
Kinetic Energy (KE)
energy of motion.
for the equation for Kinetic Energy (KE) = 1/2mv{squared}, multiply 0.5 times (m)ass times (v)elocity squared.
the answer is given in joules.
Potential Energy (PE) (PE=mgh)
energy that has been stored or held.
the equation PE = mgh multiplies (m)ass by the acceleration due to (g)ravity by the (h)eight. the answer is given in joules.
Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE)
Potential Energy due to an elevated position (based on the force of gravity)
