Physics 2 magnetism , motor effect and electromagnetic induction Flashcards
How to test the symbols on the magnet
Use a compass place next to magnet place next to south if arrow pointing to south that is south if north arrow facing away
Do this over create the field lined
What is a permanent magnet
Magnets that produce there own magnetic field all the time
What is an induced magnet
There magnetic field is temporary
When a non magnetic material is put in the field of a magnet
What is electromagnetism
Electric currents produce there own magnetic field
What is the right hand rule
Point your thumb in direction. The current is flowing
The direction you fingers are curling they’ll you the direction of magnetic field
What is a solenoid
Emecltromagnet formed by a coil of wire , generates magnetic field
Produce a uniform magnetic field
How to reverse the direction of magnetic field
Change the current
How to increase electromagnetic strength
Increase the current that flows through solenoid
Increase number of turns in a coil density packed
Add a iron core will become a induced magnet
What is the motor effect
Current carrying wire in the presence of a magnetic field will experience a force
Motor effect , use Flemings left hand rule
First finger forward , direction of magnetic field
Second finger pointing out , current
Thumb up ,direction of force
How does electro motor work
The force creates a torque on a loop of wire in the magnetic field which cause the motor to spin
Or
Electric current passing through the wire cause the magnetic field to exert a force turning the rotor
How are transformers used
Used in national grid
Power station
Use step up transformer increase v to 400000 minimise energy loss
Goes through wires and pylons
Once gets to town goes ghrough step down transformer to 230 v so it’s safe to use
What is a transformer
Used to increase and decrease voltage
How transformers work
An iron core wrapped with primary and secondary coil
An alternation voltage is applied to the primary coil cause current to flow generates magnetic field
Current and field will alternate
Induces magnetic field in iron core
Transfers current from primary to secondary use if induced fields
