Biology 2 homeostatis Flashcards
What is the endocrine system
Consists of glands which all secrete hormones passed by the blood throughout the body
What is the pituitary gland
Known as master gland which tells other glands to realease their hormones
What is the thyroid gland
Thyroxine hormone which regulates rate of metabolism
What is the negative feedback system
If the pituitary gland detects low levels of thyroxine it will release tsh ring the levels of thryroxine back to normal
What does the pancreas’s gland release
Insulin which regulates blood glucose
Does the endocrine system spread slower or faster compared to the nervous system
Slower
Where are the adrenal glands found
Kidney
Where is the thyroid gland found
Throat
What are the four hormones in the menstrual cycle
Oestrogen, progesterone, FSH, LH
How long is the menstursl cycle
28
What is mensturstion
The period begins , bleeding , as the uterus lining breaks down lasts 5 days
What does oestrogen do
Stimulates the usterus lining to grow therefore increases as the uterus develops
What does progesterone do
Increases in stage 4 and maintains lining of the uterus , if they drop the uterus lining breaks down therefore the cycle starts again
What does fsh do
It’s role is to stimulate one of the eggs to mature
What does LH do
Triggers the release of the egg also known as ovulation
How do they interact with one another
FSH stimulates the ovaries to produce oestrogen , higher levels of FSH before oestrogen starts to increase , triggers LH to increase and result in ovulation , progesterone inhibited LH AND FSH
What is blood glucose concentration
The amount of sugar in our blood stream
What happens if there is an increase in blood glucose concentration
Detected by pancreas , release insulin into blood stream , bind to receptors tell them to take in some glucose, turn to glycogen which is like a long term storage
How do you fix low leva.s of glucose
Glucagon increase blood glucose , pancreas detects glucagon travels the liver breaks this down to molecules of glucose into blood
