Chemistry 1 core practicals Flashcards
How to investigate inks
Use paper chromatography
Take filter paper and then a a pencil line called a baseline
Then add a sample of ink place the paper in a solvent
The inks will then dissolve in solvent
Each will separate at different rate showing it’s a different substance
It goes through 2 phases
Mobile phase which means the molecules can move solvent
Then goes to stationary phase which mean molecule can’t move paper
What is the rf value
Distance travelled by substance * distance travelled by solvent
How to prepare copper sulphate
Filter the copper oxide from solution copper sulphate + water
Then gently heat reaction to evaporate then let cool to make copper crystal
How to investigate neutralisation
Put a price of universal indicator on each plotting tile
Measure out 50 ml of hydrochloric acid to beaker
Weigh 0.3 calcium hydroxide
Add to acid mix
Transfer a dot to tile
Then match colour to ph scale keep repeating till 3 grams of calcium hydroxide is added
