PHYSICS Flashcards
What is a non-contact force? Give 3 examples
A force that acts on another object without making physical contact.
Gravitational force, magnetic force, electrostatic.
What is a contact force? Give 3 examples.
A force that acts on another object while making physical contact.
Friction, air resistance, resistance.
How do you calculate the resultant force of an object when two forces are acting in a straight line?
Adding the forces together.
What is weight? What factors affect the weight of an object?
Weight is force acting on an object because of gravity.
Mass of an object, gravity of a planet.
What is work done?
When energy is transferred from one object to another.
Work done = force x distance moved.
Give examples of energy transfers when work is done.
MOVING
Chemical energy————>kinetic energy
FALLING
Gravitational potential energy————>kinetic energy
SLOWING DOWN
Kinetic energy—————->thermal energy
State the differences between a linear and non-linear relationship between force and extension/compression.
Does obey Hooke’s Law = linear relationship
Doesn’t obey Hooke’s Law = non-linear relationship
What is Hooke’s Law?
If you apply a force to a spring, then the spring will stretch.
Fs (spring force) = K (spring constant) x X (spring extension/compression)
Label elastic deformation and inelastic deformation.
Describe the relationship between work done and elastic potential energy stored.
Work done = elastic potential energy stored
Describe the difference between force and extension in a spring.
Force in a spring = extension in a spring
Recall the values for:
A person walking.
A person running.
A person cycling.
A car on the motorway.
cm/s
m/s
km/s
mph
How do you describe the average speed of a moving object?
Speed = Distance/time
What is Newton’s First Law?
An object will stay at rest or continue at a constant speed unless it is acted on my an unbalanced force
What is Newton’s Second Law?
An object will change its velocity in response to a resultant force
