Physics Flashcards
Magnets: What are magnets?
Metals that are able to attract and repel each other
Name nine magnetic materials that can become magnets? Starting with: Icnsnlgds
Iron, cobalt, nickel, steel, neodymium, lodestone, gadolinium, dysprosium, samarium
What are two example of metals that are not magnetic?
Copper and aluminium
Can only magnetic materials become magnets?
Yes
What does the N and S mean on a magnets?
N is the north seeking pole and S is the south seeking pole
Can you have a magnet with one pole?
No they must have two poles a N and a S
Laws of magnetism : what are the two laws of magnetism?
- Magnets can exert forces on other magnets
- Magnets can exert forces on unmagnetised magnetic materials
What happens two N poles come close together
They repel
What happens two S poles come close together
They repel
What happens when a N pole comes close to a S pole
They attract
What happens when an N pole come close to an unmagnetised iron nail?
They attract
What happens when an S pole come close to an unmagnetised iron nail?
They attract
Complete the sentences: Like poles……..
Repel
Opposite poles……..
Attract
Both poles will always ……
Attract unmagnetised magnetic materials
