Physical Self Flashcards
Below are some of the psychologists who proposed ways on how to view the physical self
WILLIAM JAMES
SIGMUND FREUD
ERIK ERIKSON
considered body as the initial source of sensation and necessary for the origin and maintenance of personality.
WILLIAM JAMES
considered body subservient to the mind, for example, mental concentration can be so tightly focused as not only to banish ordinary sensations, but even the severest pain
WILLIAM JAMES
ego is first and foremost a body ego

SIGMUND FREUD
construction of self and personality makes the physical body the core of human experience.
SIGMUND FREUD
According to him the role of bodily organs is especially important in early developmental stages of a person’s life. Later in life, the development of physical as well as intellectual skills help determine whether the individual will achieve a sense of competence and ability to choose demanding roles in a complex society.
ERIK ERIKSON
in most modern definitions, involves two
key elements: a mental picture of one’s physical body
(including size, shape, and appearance), and one’s
attitude toward the physical self (such as thoughts,
feelings and beliefs about one’s body).
Body Image
For example, healthy children derive a sense of competence as their bodies become larger, stronger, faster and more capable of learning complex skills. However, as a stage theorist, Erikson is aware of the constant interaction of the body, psychological processes and social forces. He acknowledges the classical Freudian view of fundamental biological drives but insists that these drives are socially modifiable.
ERIK ERIKSON
may change gradually and can be
influenced by a number of social factors, such
as culture, the media, and interactions with
family and friends. It also often adapts to reflect
new information, people, and experiences.
SOCIOLOGICAL & ANTHROPOLOGICAL VIEW
of Body Image
What is Body Shaming? When you criticize your own appearance, through a judgment or comparison to another person.
When a person criticizes another person’s appearance in front of them.
When a person criticizes another person’s appearance without their knowledge.
What is Body Shaming?
Media can have a powerful influence on body image. Television, advertisements, pop culture icons, and other media can all have a powerful impact on how people regard their bodies. Conventionally attractive people with idealized features and bodies seem to present an “ideal” body type, and advertisements often suggest everyone can achieve a similar body, face, or look, if they only make the effort.
Body Image & Media
In some cases, a person may become fixated on the idea of attaining the perfect body” and engage in extensive or extreme behaviors, such as excessive dieting and exercise or repeated cosmetic surgery, in order to achieve the desired body. This behavior may place individuals at risk of
mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.
Unhealthy body image
A healthy body image means that you truly accept and like the way you look right now. It means recognizing the individual qualities and strengths that make you feel good about yourself beyond weight, shape or appearance,
and resisting the pressure to strive for the myth of the “perfect” body that you see in the media, online, in your communities.
Healthy body image
In the Eastern traditions, especially the Indian, the various aspects of self,
including the physical self, has received tremendous attention. One of
the most important achievement of Indian tradition, i.e. the schools of
Yoga, have regarded the body in different ways.
Physical Self
These attitude range from the outright rejection of the body,
because it is seen as the source of desires and attachments, to an
appreciation of the body as the main vehicle spiritual growth and
self realization.
