Physical Science Flashcards
Atoms
basic building blocks of matter composed of a nucleus, protons (+), and electrons (-).
The total number of neutrons and protons in an atom is the what?
atomic number, which determines its mass.
Isotopes
different nuclei of the same element will have the same number of protons. The number of neutrons, however, can be different.
Fusion
occurs when small nuclei combine into a larger nucleus
Fission
the process which larger nucleus splits into two smaller nuclei.
covalent bonds
when two or more atoms with similar electronegativities interact, they often achieve a noble gas electron by SHARING ELECTRONS.
ionic bond
The transfer of electrons to another atom. This happens when two atoms with large differences in electronegativity react.
Types of chemical reactions
- combination reaction
- decomposition
- single displacement reaction
- double displacement reaction
- neutralization
Combination reaction
When two or more reactants form 1 product.
Decompostition
one in which a compound breaks down into two or more substances, usually the result of heavy heatin
Ph balances
a pH of 7 or below indicates an acidic solution
a pH about 7 indicates a solution is basic
Newton’s 1st law of motion (also, Law of Inertia)
a body either at rest of in motion with constant velocity will remain that way unless a net force acts upon it.
Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion
A net force applied to a body of a mass will result in that body undergoing acceleration in the same direction as the net force.
Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion
to every action there is always an opposed byt equal reaction
Current
the flow of charge
