Physical Fieldwork Flashcards

1
Q

What were the two hypothesis

A

The river is deeper on the outside bend

The river load is smaller on the outside bend

2
Q

Why does the river flow faster in the outside bend

A

Because it is deeper, so there is less friction to slow the water down

Q

What two bits of data did we collect

Q

What method did we use to collect data of the river depth

A

Measure width of river and divide by 10 to get a measurement of one unit. Every unit across take a measurement with a metre stick and record

Q

What were the problems with measuring the river depth

A

When measuring the initial width to work out the measurements, the tape measure would hit the water and be moved, making it seem longer than it actually was
The metre ruler may have been pushed into the river bed making it seem deeper

6
Q

Which location did we use and why

A

Borrow dale ghyll( a tributary of Derwent river)
It was safe an accessible
Had a meander so fit with our results

Q

What were the risks and how did we overcome them

A

Dangerous material travelling down river: always faced in direction where water was travelling towards us
Protective clothing: people in water wore waders
Supervision: teacher was always present

Q

What method did we use to get data about the bed load

A

At every unit across the river someone randomly picked up a piece of bedload and it was measured using a calliper

Q

What were the problems with our method to get bed load data

A

The person may have subconsciously picked up the largest piece, skewing the results

Q

How did we use systematic sampling

A

In both methods, measurements were taken at regular intervals

11
Q

When did we use random sampling and how can this be improved

A

When picking up the bedload we randomly picked one up from that area
Could be improved by measuring more than one and finding an average

Q

Trend evidence anomaly for the river depth data

A

It is deeper on the outside bend
Inside bend was 15cm deep
Outside was 73 cm deep
Anomaly was that the deepest part was 7 units along the channel, then it got slightly shallower but was still deep

13
Q

Trend evidence anomaly for the sediment data

A

Sediment was bigger on the inside bend
Three largest pieces were over 10cm long, they were all on inside bend
No anomalies

14
Q

How is the sediment size data explained

A

There is less energy on the inside bend so large load can’t be transported so it is deposited and left
Also with less energy is less erosion so the sediment stays large

15
Q

How is the river depth data explained

A

There is a fastest flow at the outside bend as more erosive power and less friction slowing it down

16
Q

How did we present the river depth data and how was it good

A

Presented as a cross section diagram

Good as is simple and visually shows results

17
Q

How did we present the sediment size data and was it good

A

Presented as a scatter graph

Good as shows correlation easily
