Human Fieldwork Flashcards
What were the two hypothesis
Tourists are important for the economy of Keswick
Tourists damage the natural environment of Keswick
Where was the location for our investigation and why was it good
It was in Keswick town centre
Good because it wasn’t far for us to travel, a safe area, would allow us to get a wide range of data
What were the risks in our investigation and how did we stay safe?
Weather:checked in advance and dressed appropriately
Getting lost: everyone had map and teachers phone number
Road safety: all used pedestrian crossings
We all travelled in groups of 4s and always approached public in groups
What were the two methods of data collection we used
Environmental quality survey
Questionnaire
How did we carry out the questionnaire and what was the aim
Approached the public on the high street in groups of 2, asked questions about their time in Keswick
Aim was to find out what the impacts of tourism were on the economy of Keswick
How did we carry out the environmental quality survey and what was the aim
Each group was given a specific location and scored key aspects of the environment quality, eg/ noise, vandalism, air quality from 0-5
The aim was to judge the impact of tourism around Keswick town centre
How did we use random sampling in our fieldwork
Used random sampling in the questionnaire masked people who went past us at random locations
How did we use systematic sampling
In the EQS, everyone was spaced out in specific locations so a wide area was evenly covered
How did we present the questionnaire data and why was this good
As pie charts and bar graphs
Made it easy to compare the results and look for trends
How did we present the EQS data and why was it good
As radar graphs overlaid onto the map of Keswick in the place where they were carried out
Allowed anomalies and trends to be identified and gave a good visual overview
What were the overall trend from the questionnaire results and what does this show
47% were tourists, 46% will spend over £100
Shows there are lots of tourists that will spend money in Keswick
40% were staying over 3 days and would’ve required accommodation so would be using hotels or b&bs
14% were there for social reasons or shopping so would be spending money in the town centre
What was the overall trend in the EQS and what does this show
Overall very good quality
Average score being 6.5/20
Best location was number 1, furthest away from town centre and worst was 19, scoring 10/20 which was on the High street next to a takeaway
Shows that shops mean more litter and more people, leading to more pollution
What were the anomaly in the questionnaire
20% were going to spend £0-50
What were the problems with the questionnaire
Not everyone wanted to answer it so may be a slightly biased view towards people that were friendlier so would generally have a better option of Keswick
Went during weekday so not many families were there due to work and school, so most answers were from older people who might have different opinion
What were the problems with the EQS
It is subjective so it was difficult to decide on a rating within a group
Was carried out at different times of the day so the results will be varied
