Physical Field Work - River Darent Flashcards
Justification of location
Horton Kirby close to river system, train link, walking distance, local amenities
Risks
Working with water environment; slips and cuts and falls
Three methods of data collection
River width, depth, sediment size
River width process
Distance between banks, define by erosion or deposition, measuring tape 3x sections (within 1/5 location) 1m apart, average derived
River depth process
Depth at each location, 3 measurements = 1x middle, 1x far bank, 1x near bank, reliable results
Sediment size process
Large or small sediment found on bed, defined by abrasion or attrition, 8 sediment samples 3x per location, high data yield for reliability
Data presentation methods
Line graphs (correlation, line of best fit for pattern), cross profiles (illustrate width and depth per site, highlight external factors and anomalies)
How was data reliable?
5 sites along river for indicative data of whole, 3x depth and width measurements (reduce anomalies increase accuracy), 2 sediment samples (mean for reliability)
Improve
More sites over larger distances as sample size was too small not indicative, more accurate measuring equipment as tape was dragged by current (laser measures), go other times of year
Observations/ conclusion
Followed Bradshaw model (sediment size got smaller/ higher depth downstream), yet did not fit into model with width (narrower) due to external factors. Conclusions somewhat yet not entirely fit with project expectations
