Photoperiodism
A plant’s response to daylight.
Light intensity
The amount of visible light.
Nocturnal
Active in the night.
Diurnal
Active during the day.
Hibernation
Period of an animal or plant spending the winter in a dormant state.
Aestivation
Prolonged torpor or dormancy of a plant.
Counter-current blood flow
Blood flowing from the body core to the periphery carries heat that can be readily lost through the skin
Migration
Migration is the movement of animals from one area to another.
Annual (plant)
Only visible for part of the year.
Deciduous (plant
Lose their leaves during Autumn, for Winter.
Evergreen (plant)
Keep their leaves year-round.
Bulb (plant
To avoid extreme heat and cold, fire (a hazard of hot
regions) or droughts, some plants exist as bulbs,
corms, tubers or rhizomes.
Corms
A rounded underground storage organ present in plants.
Tubers
A much thickened underground part of a stem.
Rhizomes
A continuously growing horizontal underground stem which puts out lateral shoots and adventitious roots at intervals.
