Aquatic Biomes Flashcards
Seaweeds
Large algae growing in the sea or on rocks below the high-water mark.
Decomposers
Organisms that break down dead, dead or decaying matter, they carry out decomposition.
Scavengers
Animals that feed on carrion, dead plant material, or refuse.
Biodiversity
Variety of organisms that live on Earth.
Tides
Long-period waves that move through the oceans in response to the forces exerted by the moon and sun. Tides originate in the oceans and progress toward the coastlines where they appear as the regular rise and fall of the sea surface.
Symbiotic
Involving interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association.
Filter
A device for removing impurities or solid particles from a liquid or gas passed through it, a device used to remove unwanted material.
Filter feeders
A subgroup of suspension feeding animals that feed by straining suspended matter and food particles from water, usually by passing over the water over a specialized filtering structure.
Intertidal
The area of a seashore which is covered at high tide and uncovered at low tide.
Coral reef
An underwater ecosystem characterized by reef-building corals, they best in warm, shallow, clear, sunny and agitated waters.
Photosynthesis
A process of plants making sugars and oxygen, using sunlight, from carbon dioxide, gas and water.
Algae
Plant-like living things that can make food from sunlight by photosynthesizing.
Estuary
The tidal mouth of a large river, where the tide meets the stream.
Spawning
To produce young, especially in large numbers
Wetland
A distinct ecosystem that is flooded by water, either permanently or seasonally.
