A
- Done at upper left, lower left, upper right and lower right quadrants of flank
- Listen for 1 minute in each quadrant
- Record borborygmi

A
Intestinal Motility Sounds
* sound like thunder or approaching freight train
* normal is 1-3 / minute in each quadrant

A
- 0 = no motility heard
- +1 = hypomotility
- +2 = normal
- +3 = hypermotility

Venipuncture
A
- Perform in jugular, located in jugular groove
- Never tie a horse during collection

Giving IV Injections
A
- Give in jugular
- Administer at proximal 1/3 of neck
- Careful to avoid Carotid Artery

Nasogastric Intubation
A
- Stand on left side of horse (esophagus on left side of neck)
- Keep head flexed at 90 degrees - do not extend
- Angle tube ventrally
- Can leave tube in for 10-12 hours - may cause necrosis of tissue in nasal passage
