What does a positive Cullen or grey turners sign indicate?
Retroperitoneal hemorrhage and intrabdominal bleeding
What does purplish striae indicate?
Cushing disease. The manifestation of excessive corticosteroids within a patient.
What is the range of bowel sounds?
5-35 minutes that occur irregularly
What are borborygmi?
Loud, prolonged gurgles
What does high pitched tinkling sound suggest?
Intestinal fluid and air under pressure, seen in early obstruction
What do decreased bowel sounds indicate?
Peritonitis or paralytic ileus
What are high pitched sounds associated with?
Friction rubs
What is the normal liver span?
6-12cm
Where is the spleen for percussion purposes?
Posterior to the midaxillary line, left side, left inferior border between 6 and 10th ribs.
If prominent lateral pulsation is present what is that indicative of?
Aortic aneurysm
Where is McBurney’s point located?
2 inches from the anterior superior iliac spine on a straight line from the umbilicus
How should solid organs sound?
Dull
How should hollow organs sound?
Tympany
What are jaundice, cyanosis, and ascities associated with?
Physiologic problems
What do pearl-like umbilical nodes indicate?
Intraabdominal lymphoma
What causes dis tension?
Obesity, enlarged organs, fluid or gas
What causes Venus hums?
Increased portal and systemic circulation
What do friction rubs indicate?
Inflammation of the peritoneal surface of the organ from a tumor, infection or infarction
What does a liver over 2-3cm indicate?
Organ displacement
When does rigidity occur?
Over inflamed gallbladder
What does pencil like stool indicate?
Cancer
What does light tan/gray stool indicate?
Obstructive jaundice
What does tarry black stool indicate?
Upper GI bleed
What does bright red or maroon stool indicate?
Lower Gi bleed
What do tenderness and inflammation of the perianal area indicate?
Access, anorectal fistula or fissure, or polinidal cyst
