Leaves gallbladder through cystic duct
flows from cystic duct to common bile duct
flows from common bile duct into duodenum
resorbed and recycled in the terminal ileum
What is bile composed of?
Bile salts and cholesterol and bilirubin
bile is useful for the emulsification of fats
What is the pathophysiology of cholecystitis?
Inflammtion of the gall bladder
associated with gallstone in over 90 percent of cases
the other 10 percent is caused by acalculous cholecystitis
gallstone obstructs the cystic duct and inflammation develops behind the obstruction
What are the six F’s of cholecystitis?
Fat, fertile, 40, female, flatulence, fever
How do you treat cholecystitis?
Surgical treatment is the mainstay
Ertapenem and ceftriazone for mild to moderate
for severe piperacillin-tazobactam
