Physical environment Flashcards
1
Q
access to water//sanitation background?
A
• Developing countries are less likely to have infrastructure to supply drinking water/remove human waste as in Australia.
2
Q
access to water/sanitation effects?
A
water needed to grow grops, generate electricity, maintain natuaral environment…
3
Q
effects of housing?
A
- Lack of sanitation can infect water sources to be used for cleaning bodies/clothes/dishes
- Reliance of fuels like wood/coal without ventilation (chimneys) can increase risk of pneumonia, respiratory conditions, asthma. Being sick can limit education/employment…
- Lack of heating/cooling to deal with extreme temps can increase risk of death from pre-existing conditions like heart disease.
- Houses may not be in a good state, leading to falls.
- Overcrowding can increase psychological stress climatand make disease spread quicker.
4
Q
effects of intrastructure?
A
Background
• Includes water/sanitation structures, electricity/gas supply, communication system, roads and PT systems
Effects
• Can reduce access to things
5
Q
climate (change) background?
A
- People living in developed countries usually have more secure homes/infrastructure and more infrastructure to deal with extremes in temperature
- The world’s temperature has been rising
6
Q
climate change effects?
A
- Rising temperatures can decrease production of staple foods, lead to heat stroke…
- Less rainfall can lead to less access to drinking water/water for watering plants
- Rising sea levels can displace people living near sea/rivers
- Cause air pollution – smog is produced when pollution from vehicles etc reacts with sunlight and heat. Because there’s more of these things, there is more smog, so potentially more respiratory conditions.
