Physical development: Middle Adulthood 45-65 Flashcards
What is middle aged spread?
Middle aged spread is fat that may accumulate around the abdomen in the middle age. This is because the metabolism slows down and weight increases.
What causes muscle decline?
Muscle decline is caused by changing hormones that decrease the muscle tone and strength.
What causes hair colour to go grey?
Pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die. When there are fewer pigment cells in a hair follicle, the strand of hair will no longer contain as much melanin and will become a more transparent colour, like grey, silver or white- as it grows.
What causes skin elasticity reduction?
Wrinkles are a natural part of the ageing process. As people get older, their skin gets thinner, drier and less elastic, and less able to protect itself from damage. This leads to wrinkles, creases and lines on the skin. Environmental factors such as smoking and direct sunlight can accelerate the development of wrinkles.
What does a receding gum line do?
It causes sensitivity, infections and tooth loss.
What is menopause?
Menopause is when a woman stops her period and is no longer able to get pregnant naturally. This occurs between the ages 45-55, its due to oestrogen levels declining.
What happens during menopause?
- headaches and hot flushes
- hair becomes thinner and loses luster
- teeth loosen and gums recede
- breasts drop and flatten
- risk of cardiovascular disease
- back aches
- skin and mucous membranes become drier
- skin develops a rough texture
- abdomen loses muscle tone
What is gonadotropin?
An increase in gonadotropin that try to stimulate failing egg production can cause hot flushes and night sweats.
What is osteoporosis?
The longer a woman experiences lower oestrogen levels, the lower her bone density is likely to be. More porous bones (chalk like) the easier they break and slower they are to mend.
What does a decline of oestrogen and progesterone do?
It causes a shrinking of sexual organs.
