Physical & Cognitive Development In Middle Childhood Flashcards
Concrete Operations
Logical thinking about concrete or observable properties of objects and materials; characteristic of middle childhood
Attention Defecit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Excessive levels of hyperactivity and an inability to concentrate for normal periods of time
Conservation
A belief certain properties, such as quantity, remain constant despite changes in perceived features such as dimensions, position and shape
Decent ration
The last of 3 steps in concrete operational thought where an individual can simultaneously consider the two dimensions present to justify the reversal of the irrelevant transformation
Intelligence
A general ability to learn from experience; the ability to reason abstractly
Metalinguistic Awareness
The ability to attend to language as an object of thought rather than attending only to the content or ideas of a language
Metamemory
An individual’s knowledge about their own memory processes
Multiple Intelligences
According to Howard Gardner’s theory of intelligence, there are distinctive types of intelligence or ways of adapting to the environment
Obese
Significantly overweight. In childhood, obesity us being in the 95th percentile or above in weight for age; in adulthood, obesity is having a body mass index over 30
Participation Structures
Regular patterns if discourse or interactions in classrooms with unstated rules about how, when and to whom to speak
Recall Memory
Retrieval of information by using few or no external cues
Recognition Memory
Retrieval of information by comparing an external stimulus or cue with pre-existing experiences or knowledge
Reversibility
Ability to mentally undo an action
Seriation
An ordinal understanding of properties such as size, length and weight. An important precursor to the development of mathematics
Triarchic Theory of Intelligence
A view of intelligence as consisting of three components: (1) adaptibility, (2) information processing skills and (3) the ability to deal with novelty
