Physical chemistry (topic 3) Flashcards
Activation energy
minimum amount of energy that particles must collide with the react
Calorimetry
process used to measure the amount of heat and energy release or absorbed during a chemical reaction
Catalyst
increases rate of reaction by creating a different pathway they don’t get used up
Collision theory
chemical reacts only occur when particles collide with the correct orientation and sufficient energy
Effect of concentration on reaction rate
increasing concentration of reactants means the particles have higher reaction rate
Effect of pressure on reaction rate
increasing pressure of a gas means the particles have higher reaction rate
Effect of surface area on reaction rate
increasing surface area means the particles have higher reaction rate
Effect of temperature on reaction rate
increasing temperature increases reaction rate
Endothermic reaction
energy is taken In from the surrounding so the temperature of the surrounding decrease
Enthalpy change
amount of heat given out or absorbed during a reaction
Exothermic reaction
energy is transferred to the surrounding so the temperature of the surrounding increase
Heat energy change
Q=mc x change in temp
Molar enthalpy change
amount of heat energy given out or absorbed by one mole of a substance during a reaction
