Physical Chemistry 2 Flashcards
What is diffusion and what states can it occur in?
The movement of particles from a high concentration to a low concentration. This can occur in liquids and gases.
What is a chemical reaction?
The process which changes reactants into different chemicals.
What happens to the atoms of reactants when reactants are changed into products?
They are rearranged.
How are reactants changed into products?
The reactants are decomposed by breaking chemical bonds. This is the process requires activation energy. Once the reactants have decomposed new chemical bonds are formed.
What are fuels?
Fuels are materials which store potential energy.
What is the most common source of fuels for humans?
Hydrocarbons
What is coal used for?
Heating, cooking and power generation.
What is paraffin used for and what state is it in?
It is used commonly for candles. It is a solid.
What is kerosene used for and what state is it in?
Kerosene is commonly used in aircraft. It is a liquid.
What is fuel oil used for and what state is it in?
It is commonly used in ships. It is a liquid.
What is compressed natural gas (CNG) used for and what state is it in?
It is commonly used for cars, heaters and in labs. It is a gas.
What is liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) used for and what state is it in?
It is used for heating, cooking and cars. It is a gas.
What is charcoal used for?
Barbecues.
What are fossil fuels?
Fossil fuels are hydrocarbons.
What is activation energy?
The energy required to initiate a chemical reaction.
