Physical and Cognitive development in Adulthood Flashcards
Biological Aging
covers life span
Asynchronous: everyone has their own pattern to follow
Heavily influenced by nurturing we’re exposed to
Senescence
Harmful events that influence us
How our appearance changes (wrinkles)
body function
Senility
examination of more harmful senescence events- those leading to death
Life expectancy
1900 ~50 years
2012 ~80(M) and 84 (F)
Statistics Canada can estimate this- slop is starting to decline
Thinning gap between M and F
Max life expectancy
typical human: 120 years
oldest: 122
Down Syndrome
Average life span: 45 usually due to cardiovascular disorder disease of aging physiological disorder: increase BP rate of aging
Progeria
diagnosed age 2
average lifespan: 13- cardiovascular disorder
Chromosome 1: small telomere lining
8-10 time their actual ago
extremely harmful senescence events-very rare
Werner’s Syndrome
Chromosome 8
Onset: age 15-20, aren’t diagnosed till later
Recessive: 1/ 200 000 people
3-4 times normal aging process
Many have children and potentially pass this on
Cumulative effects of random events
Damage to DNA in cells -> mutations
Accumulation -> less efficiency in repair and replacement -> aging
Probable cause is free radicals : alter chain reactions that occur in body - antioxidants counter this effect
The more you do to you body over time, the more it breaks down
Cross-linkage theory
fibers bend because of aging and that causes them to cross-link
not intended to do this-deteriorate quicker
Motor performance changes
decrease heart and lung function combined with gradual muscle loss
Is it aging or decrease motivation and practice?
Athletes peak at 20-30 years
If practice continues: 2% decline per decade
Post formal thought
Cognitive turning point may have been reached
simplicity in thoughts
-things are harder to figure out
-no longer able to remember
Indicator you are moving towards senescence
Schaies Theory- 4 stages
Shift from acquiring knowledge to using it
1) Acquisition: piagets 4 stage (WHAT)
2) Achieving: adulthood, figuring thing out (HOW)
3) Responsibility: adulthood, enjoy career, satisfaction with role in life, take on more responsibilities (HOW)
4) Reintergrative: late adulthood, prioritize, revaluate surroundings, become more picky (WHY)
