Physical and Chemical Weathering Flashcards
Processes that change the characteristics of rocks on Earth’s surface.
Physical and Chemical Weathering
More area of the surface is exposed…
The faster the weathering process will occur.
Smaller particles experience ___________ weathering.
Greater
The harder the material is…
The more resistant it is to weathering.
Results to the same, but smaller component of the weathered material.
Physical Weathering
Mostly sand-sized sediments and larger grains produced from Physical Weathering ranging in size from fine silts and clay to large boulders and gravel.
Lithic Clasts
Breakup of rock due to seeping in water through the cracks of a rock. Freezing and Thawing.
Frost Wedging
Peeling away of large sheets of loosened material at a surface of a rock
Exfoliation
Rocks worn down by friction.
Abrasion
Weathering by plants where root hairs size out small cracks and pits in rocks.
Biological Activity
Oxygen reacts chemically with minerals. Eg. Rusting
Oxidation
Water reacts chemically with minerals through absorption.
Hydration
Carbon Dioxide outside reacts chemically with minerals.
Carbonation
