Chemical Rocks Flashcards
Represent a type of rock that begins as sediments, which are then cemented together through natural processes.
Chemical Sedimentary Rocks
Rocks formed by chemical precipitation.
Chemical Rocks
Most common chemical sedimentary rock. Mostly from fragments of marine organisms.
Limestone
An example of an evaporite, forms by the evaporation of water, typically seawater and the precipitation of dissolved minerals. Softer than rock salt, does not have a salty taste.
Rock Gypsum
Microcrystalline or Cryptocrystalline sedimentary rock that is made up of mostly silica.
Chert
Kind of limestone that is deposited by mineral-rich hot springs or geysers.
Travertine
Are unique chemical sedimentary rocks composed of alternating layers of iron-rich minerals such as hematite and magnetite, and silica rich minerals.
Banded Iron Formation (BIF)
Are chemical sedimentary rocks that form when water evaporates and leaves behind small minerals. Eg. Halite, Gypsum, and Anhydrite.
