Physical and chemical properties Flashcards
What are physical properties?
A characteristic of a substance that can be determined without changing the composition of that substance.
What are quantitative properties?
Physical properties that can be measured with apparatus.
What are some examples of quantitative properties?
Melting point, boiling point, density, conductivity, PH, Solubility, Viscosity, Hardness, dough, length, volume, weight, heat of vaporization and ionization energy.
What are qualitative properties?
Physical properties that are difficult to measure.
What are some examples of qualitative properties?
Conductivity, Malleability, Lustre, Ductility, Color, Shape, Size, Odour, Texture, Viscosity, resistance to flow, Solubility, Magnetism, and Hardness.
What are chemical properties?
Characteristic of a substance that may be observed when it chemically reacts.
What are some examples of chemical properties?
Toxicity, Reactivity, Coordination number, Oxidation states, Flammability, Heat of combustion, Enthalpy of formation, Chemical stability under specific conditions, Acidity or basicity, Radioactivity.
