Physical and chemical changes Flashcards
What is a physical change?
A change in which the composition of the substance remains unaltered and no new substances are produced.
What is a chemical change?
A change in the starting substance or substances and the production of one or more new substances.
How can you distinguish between a physical and chemical change?
In a physical change the appearance or form of the matter changes but the kind of matter in the substance does not. However in a chemical change, the kind of matter changes and at least one new substance with new properties is formed.
How do you know if a chemical change has occurred?
If there is a change in colour, odour, temperature, or light, bubbling (not caused by heating), and the formation of a new solid.
What is precipitate?
A solid that separates from a solution.
