Q

A

Such statements make me ashamed. I think the label “Baptist” and “church” is misleading. It’s uncomfortable when such examples are used to “prove” that some Christian churches support violence against minorities.

Q

A

Some biblical texts states that gays acts should be punished with death. Is it not therefore understandable if Christians would criminalize homosexuality?

Q

A

The answer is no. Firstly we find the texts in the Law of Moses - who also speaks of the death penalty for working on the Sabbath (2 Mos 31.15), infidelity (3 Mos 20,10) and blasphemy (3 Mos 26.16). A very random Bible use underlies when only gays are attacked.

Q

A

More fundamentally, it is that the Law of penal provisions may not apply after Jesus came to earth. As known to stop Jesus stoning of a woman who had committed adultery (Jn 8.1 to 11).

Q

A

For most Christians - Protestants as Catholics - it is thus unthinkable to advocate that all immorality should be prohibited or punished.

Q

A

Therefore, it is also not problematic that Christians (or Muslims) have a different morality than secular Norwegians - if it comes to profanity, alcohol, premarital sex, homosexuality or abortion.

17
Q

A

In a diverse society, we think differently about right and wrong in many areas. As long as we accept the individual’s right to follow its own morality, within Norwegian law, we can live with such diversity.

Everyone is guilty

Q

A

“I do not understand why gays, according to Paul, deserves to die,” wrote an anonymous girl recently in Aftenposten (2/6). I’m guessing she had verse Romans 1.32 in mind.

After a number of examples of sin and immorality are mentioned, concludes Paul thus: “They know well the righteous judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death.”

Some are shocked that Paul believes that “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). But it is important to understand that his words apply to every sin. I will also be affected. Christians think that we are all guilty before God - because we daily sins in thoughts, words and deeds - and thus deserving of death.

19
Q

A

Paul speaks is not about what actions deserving death. This is about meeting with God, not the state. The thinking is that whoever is not forgiven on the last day, will face eternal death.

Therefore Christians preach repentance importance and grace opportunity - do not spread hatred. A Christian thinking that all people belong to the group the “sinful.” The question is whether we are forgiven sinners.
