Phototherapy Flashcards
Describe the yellow of the skin to a patient
NWCPM
Normally a chemical called bilirubin can be excreted out of our systems however in those that have this yellowing of the skin its not being excreted out properly and thus the yellowing is that bilirubin being built up
There are several causes including through breast milk where it can cause an elevation in this bilirubin. But its also their red blood cells with a short lifespan and because they’re so small, they have a lot of RBC. These RBC when they die release bilirubin and hence the yellowing
What is phototherapy
Baby => Cot with direct light to convert bilirubin into something your baby can get rid of
How long does a baby need to be in phototherapy for?
All day but can be left out for 30mins for breastfeeding and cuddle time
It will be in there until there is a safe amount of bilirubin in your child
SE of Phototherapy (2)
Very safe*
Rash + loose stool + can get dehydrated
What happens if they choose no phototherapy?
When dangerous amounts of bilirubin builds up - it can lead to a condition called kernicterus.
This is where the bilirubin passes to the brain and causes damage to the brain + spinal cord which can be life threatining.
It can also cause severe disability such as cerebral palsy, hearing loss and learning disabilities
