Photosynthesis L1-L2 Flashcards
Name the 2 photo systems?
Photo system 1 and 2
What is the term photolysis?
The splitting of water using light energy
What is the formula for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy = 6O2 + C6H12O6
What is ATP and what is it used for?
Adenosine triphosphate, the source of energy for use and storage in a cell. Light energy must be stored in ATP molecules before glucose is made.
The function of the antenna chlorophyll and carotenoid molecules?
Capture protons (light particles) and transfer energy to electrons
What is the Thylakoid membrane?
Found inside the chloroplast, they are the site of light dependant reactions. Found in stacks.
What is a stack of thylakoid membranes called
Granum or grana
What is the Phloem
Living tissue that transports sugars
What is the stomata
Pores that allow for gas exchange
What is the xylem
Dead cells that transport water
Why do leaves change colour in the fall?
Chlorophyll breaks down allowing to see accessory pigments
When an atom is oxidized it produces?
NADP+ (loses electrons)
When an atom is reduced it produces?
NADPH (gains electrons)
What is a photo system?
Clusters of chlorophyll embedded in the thylakoid membrane
What happens in photo system 2?
Light strikes chloroplast, protons exite chlorophyll molecules
