Photosynthesis And Respiration Flashcards
Describe the conversion of energy through the process of photosynthesis
Light energy is converted into chemical energy then stored in the sugar molecules produced
What is the word equation for photosynthesis
C02 + water -> sugar + oxygen
Describe stage 1 of photosynthesis
Light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll and some is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. ADP + Pi is converted into ATP. The oxygen is release into the atmosphere.
Describe stage 2 of photosynthesis
The ATP produced in the first stage is broken down into ADP + Pi to combine hydrogen from stage one and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to produce sugar.
What is the fate of sugars produced by photosynthesis
Energy- sugar can be broken down by the process of respiration, then the energy can be used for cellular activities such as cell division
Can be converted into starch and stored until it needs to be used
Can be converted into cellulose and used to build the cell wall
Can’t be converted into fat
Can be combined with nitrates to make amino acids
What 3 factors limit the rate of photosynthesis
Light intensity
Carbon dioxide concentration
Temperature
Which cell activities require energy
Cell division (mitosis) Protein synthesis Active transport Muscle contraction Transmission of nerve impulses
How is energy broken down and regenerated
Energy is released when ATP breaks down into ADP + Pi, and energy is required to regenerate it back into ATP
What is respiration
The process of releasing energy from food
Where does photosynthesis take place
Chloroplasts
